BHJungle Achievements March-August 2006

At a recent staff meeting we discussed what we had achieved so far in Year 2 of the Balsall Heath Jungle City Fruit Project (funded by the Big Lottery Fund).

  • A big presence at Balsall Heath Jungle at Balsall Heath Carnival 2 July 2005
  • 3 clusters of Balsall Heath residents who are starting to garden together (taking advantage of gardening stuff provided by a grant from KPMG - see £100 gardening stuff for Balsall Heath residents
  • We have continued to provide monthly newsletters and Open Saturdays, and monthly articles to The Heathan.
  • We have set up and expanded this new website.
  • People still pop in every Tuesday for shared lunch, or advice, or to buy something for their garden. We have just started putting a stall out on the street on Tuesdays too.
  • The women's group still meets on Thursday, at 100 Mary Street or an allotment and Nishat is now available here from 10-2 to speak to any woman who drops in on a Thursday.
  • [Ernst Young] provided 15 volunteers to help clear 2 allotments which 2 Jungle members wish to share with others - we aim to keep them weed-free and organic and ready for planting.

Outside the City Fruit Project
  • Rob continues to provide  St Pauls Nursery and  Jakeman Nursery with a weekly children's gardening  session (which they pay for).  There have been good harvests of potatoes, broad beans, raspberries,
  • Jakeman Nursery paid us to plant a whole line of gruit trees against a fence, which Pat has been watering weekly as a volunteer - thanks Pat.
