What is a Forest School?A forest school encourages an appreciation of the natural world and builds self esteem and confidence. This is achieved through regular visits to special woodland sites. Individuals can master tasks of increasing complexity and learn the associated social skills I presently have 2 children age 3 & 5 who are in the formal education system. I feel that there is a fundamental part of my childrens learning that is not being nurtured within the formal education system and for me access to forest school would provide this. I am tentatively trying to find out if there are any other parents in Balsall Heath who would also be interested in this sort of education with a view to trying to establish a forest school localy. Training as a leader is available, the first level costs £624. For more information visit Bridgwater Forest School (need to add site) Martineau Gardens has been suggested as a possible site which is in easy cycling distance of Balsall Heath (let's get some road craft in as well!) Please leave a comment if you are interested and what this page for further details. Comments:From Roots [84.65.192.162] - 4/18/05 9:43 AM Both myself and Jenny Whale are interested in doing the training if it looked like it would be possible.
From Thug - 4/17/05 2:57 PM Chris and I both think you would be great as a leader! d'u fancy doing the training? I've just had a 10 minute slot in Serena's with the girls. I would like to attend a forest school myself and learn some outdoor skills!
From Thug - 4/17/05 2:53 PM Hi Ruth, yes I'm definitely interested, I'm hoping to get more time this week to look up those links, there must be some other interested parents, bet there are some in Moseley! Did you talk to Caroline Starr yet?
From ChrisDuggan - 4/15/05 9:20 AM Did you mean Bridgewater College Forest School? See also www.archimedes-training.co.uk/forestschools
and this from Bishopswood, a beautiful training centre between Worcester and Kidderminster www.bishopswoodcentre.org.uk. The Forest Education Initiative has an interest in what they call forest schools, and has a cluster group in the Black Country We should bear in mind too that the Lickey Hills is very accessible by train from New Street, and that we could get some involvement from the Rangers. Cannon Hill Park has two adjoining woodlands, plus the old beech and oak wood at Holders Lane. From ChrisDuggan - 4/15/05 8:34 AM I can't find Bridgnorth Forest School on Google.
