Compost mixture for a tree in a tub

Show Tools

(Chris-)

  • Don't forget it's easier to look after a tree planted directly in the ground.
  • Most garden centre compost contains peat. Don't use it - it destroys the wetland areas of Britain, beautiful wild places.
  • Put gravel or woodchip or other chunky stuff in the bottom
  • POSSIBLE INGREDIENTS:
    • Use up to 50% home-made compost
    • Use up to 25% leafmould (autumn leaves rotted down for one year)or Cambark (composted bark)
    • Use up to 25% good topsoil from your garden (this makes it heavier - you may not want this)
    • Use up to 25% Lakeland Gold
    • Use up to 100% Danu or other peat-free organic potting compost
  • Mix the ingredients really well.
  • Soil on its own can set like concrete. Homemade compost on its own can be too sticky. Leafmould or composted bark keep the mix free draining.
  • You can buy Lakeland Gold, Danu and Cambark from Jungle.
  • Every autumn, scrape off the top layer of compost and put on some fresh homemade compost or Lakeland Gold.
  • In the summer, add a layer of fresh homemade compost or Lakeland Gold at least once to feed the tree. (-Chris)
