Potatoes without digging

Potatoes can be planted late March to April (they don't like frost). If you get them early, wash them gently, & put them on trays in a cool, light indoor place, to let them sprout. Make sure you don't break off the sprouts when you plant them!

Potatoes can be grown without digging the soil: cover up the weeds with thick newspaper or cardboard, make holes in it so you can place each potato (sprouts up) on the ground, pile lots of home-made compost, leafmould and mulch on top of them. When the plants come through, keep piling on more stuff each week (including grass cuttings, and comfrey leaves if you have them), but make sure most of the potato leaves are still showing. They need plenty of water in the summer.
