How can I prepare a new allotment over winter for organic growing in the spring?

Show Tools

Hi

I have a new allotment space and am just digging it over.  As the growing season is coming to an end i would like to know how best to prepare it for next year.

Is there a way of organically fertilising the soil by growing something over the winter or should I just dig it over and cover it.

Thanks

Kirsty

Thank you. Yes, I will look into green manure and definately plan to plant some garlic.

It is getting quite late to sow green manures, but depending on where you live, you could try one of the ones suggested here, which I think are obtainable from Chase Organics and Tamar Organics. http://www.hdra.org.uk/organicgardening/grn_mans.htm

If the link doesn't work, I got to it by searching google for "green manures" hdra

Broad beans and garlic won't fertilise the ground, but they will get off to a flying start in the spring and be ready to pick in June
