Grease bands on fruit trees
|
Grease bands should be put round trunks and tree stakes about 45cm
(18in) above soil level in late October, before the adult moths begin
to crawl up the trees in November. Moths get less active after January,
but as sometypes are active until April, you might need to put more
grease on from time to time.
From
April, grease bands can protect against ants, which bring greenfly to
the newly growing leaves. When the grease gets bits stuck to it, the
ants can walk across it, so you need to put more on.
Grease harms the bark of young trees, which is why we use the greaseproof paper.
Grease bands don't protect against codling moth, the commonest cause of maggoty apples.
