Pruning Buddleja

Buddleja globosa ("orange golfball tree") can be pruned in early spring, after it's come alive again. Don't prune it too hard. This buddleja keeps its leaves longest in the winter, and has spherical orange flowers which appear earlier than other buddlejas. It can grow to 3.5m (11')

Buddleja davidii ("the butterfly bush") can be pruned very hard.

Buddleia daviddi or Butterfly bush is pruned hard back in spring to the lowest pair of leaf buds on each of the main stems in Feb/March. Do not feed it or it will produce too many leaves at the expense of flowers. I inherited a very old overgrown bush so each year i cut out one old woody branch until i was happy with it's managable size.
