Tree Wardens For Balsall Heath

A couple of very large black poplars were felled recently in a garden on the corner of Cromer Road and Tindal St. A Jungle member valiantly went to speak to the tree surgeons, and called in a tree officer from Birmingham City Council to see if they could be saved. Apparently they were unsafe because they were rotting in the middle due to having been pruned very heavily years ago.

It has been suggested that we need a tree warden or two to keep an eye on the trees in the area. They would need a lot of support, some of which Balsall Heath Jungle could give. Some support could come from Birmingham City Council tree officers, some from a national organisation. The first step could be to walk around the area with a tree officer and identify which trees already have tree preservation orders, and which trees need one.

Other ideas:

  • oak trees and a horse chestnut for George St park
  • a tree nursery: seeds collected by children from local woodland to grow smaller "native" trees for Balsall Heath gardens (e.g. rowans, birches)
  • a coppice in George Street park
