Organic Gardening In June

YOUR GARDEN IN JUNE

More info from www.hdra.org.uk

þ      As soon as June arrives you can think about planting tender plants such as courgettes, tomatoes, cucumbers and sweetcorn outside. However, do protect newly-planted crops with fleece if possible.

þ      Plant tomatoes 50cm apart and tie them well to a strong stake. Outdoor cucumbers and courgettes need to be 60cm apart and pumpkins need 120cm between each plant.

þ      Sweetcorn should be planted out in squares to allow the male flowers at the top of the plant to pollinate the female flowers lower down the plants. 50cm between each plant is a good distance.

þ      Transplant seedlings of cabbages, Brussels sprouts, calabrese and broccoli into rows 50cm apart with 50cm between each plant.

þ      TIP: this paper is 30cm by 21cm.  You don’t have to be exact!

þ      You can still sow carrots, beetroot, radishes, lettuce, spring onions, peas, swede, French beans, runner beans, courgettes, pumpkins and sweetcorn.

þ      Thin your apples and pears down to one in each cluster. This will make the fruits bigger and you won’t end up with lots of tiny fruits.
